Agarwood is an aromatic resinous wood that forms within some Aquilaria trees. It is also produced in a closely related genus called Gyrinops. Both of these trees, grew sparsely in the rain forests of Asia, but are now considered endangered in most countries and rarely found in natural forests.

For thousands of years this resinous wood was burned as incense during meditation and prayer to help people achieve a higher level of consciousness and a state of deep inner peace. Many cultures consider Agarwood the most precious of materials.

Today’s incense masters can determine the regional origin of the Agarwood from its aroma and can even differentiate slight variances that may be found in Agarwood from within one region.

Agarwood is available across India, Burma, Bhutan, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka. Each region has a unique Agarwood character.

Agarwood growth depends upon a lot of conditions that need to complement each other perfectly. The right soil, the perfect weather and climate are essential. The Oudh creation process within an Agarwood tree may sometimes take upwards of 25 years to manifest. There is also another interesting aspect; you could have hundreds of potential Agar bearing trees that might be 50 years old and yet they might not have any Oudh inside them. Which means, it is a game of sheer patience and perseverance.

Also, the process of identifying whether an Agarwood tree will have Oudh is a true art - one which needs the vision of an expert.

The craftsmanship to extract Oudh from Agarwood is also an art. Tedious and painstaking, it is a testament to the artist who can pick Oudh from a tree, just as a jeweler picks a diamond from the rough.
